Evolution of VR Data Entry
There have been countless attempts at simplifying data entry for virtual reality. Unfortunately, the controllers used for most VR devices do not provide easy to use data entry options. Most companies have tried to implement some form of computer keyboard visualization in VR. Some people have used a webcam to stream a video of their keyboard and hands in VR. But that oftentimes looks unnatural, having a small window in VR showing the real world. There is also an example where Logitech attached a VR tracking device to a keyboard, so that you could display the tacked keyboard in VR. This was good, however, you still could not see your hands, so you still had to do touch typing, which is not an easy skill for people to learn. Then you also have augmented reality options, but these options don’t provide the benefits of a full VR environment. Most recently Facebook released a video of some early prototyping of hand tracking being used for typing, it’s unique, and not very natural, but it is progress for data entry in VR. Check out the article by UploadVR for more details. But ultimately, the first step in bridging the gap between the real world and VR data entry needs to be something that is commonly used right now. Such as your hands and keyboard.
